FAQ Categories
Utilities can sometimes be tax-deductible, but this depends on your specific circumstances. For instance, if you operate a business from your home, a portion of your utility costs may qualify as deductible business expenses. These expenses could include electricity, heating, and natural gas, proportionate to the space used exclusively for your business.
If you’re a landlord or use your property for rental income, utility expenses related to maintaining the rental property may also be deductible. However, personal utility costs, such as those for residential use without a business connection, are generally not tax-deductible.
It’s important to note that tax rules vary, and eligibility for deductions depends on factors like the nature of your work, the percentage of your home used for business, and local tax regulations. Consulting a tax professional or accountant can help you identify what utility expenses might be deductible and ensure you maximize your eligible tax benefits.
When natural gas is used to heat water, it works kind of like a natural gas furnace, but for water. The natural gas burns and heats a component called a heat exchanger. The cold water comes into the water heater and goes around this heat exchanger. As it does, the water gets warm from the heat of the burning gas. Then, this hot water is sent to your taps or shower when needed.
A natural gas furnace works by using natural gas to create heat. Here’s how it usually goes: First, turning on the furnace pulls in some natural gas and air. Then, it burns the gas inside a special chamber. This burning creates heat, which is pushed through a series of tubes or coils. As the air in your home passes over these hot tubes or coils, it gets warm. Finally, this warm air is sent through ducts into the different rooms of your home. That’s how a natural gas furnace keeps your house warm.
A good fixed rate for electricity depends on several factors, including your location, the current market conditions, and your energy provider. In general, a competitive fixed rate will be lower than the average market rate for electricity over the contract period, offering stability and potential savings.
In Alberta, for example, the average electricity rate fluctuates between 8 to 12 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). A good fixed rate would fall within or below this range, allowing consumers to lock in a price that protects them from future market volatility. The key is to lock in a rate when the market is low, as this provides the most potential for long-term savings.
It’s important to consider your household energy consumption as well. If you use a large amount of electricity, securing a lower fixed rate will be more beneficial over time. On the other hand, if your energy usage is low, a slightly higher fixed rate might still provide the price stability you need.
Ultimately, a good fixed rate should align with your budget, protect you from market fluctuations, and offer the potential for savings over the life of the contract.
