Natural gas is usually found deep underground, mixed in with oil or coal, or in layers of rock. To get to it, companies drill into the ground, sometimes using special methods to release the gas from the rock. Once they get the gas out, they clean it to remove any water or other substances. Then, the natural gas is ready to be used for heating, making electricity, or for other purposes.
Some of the largest power plants in Alberta include the Sundance and Keephills coal-fired power plants, as well as natural gas-fired facilities like Shepard Energy Centre and H.R. Milner Generating Station. Alberta is also home to several renewable energy projects, including wind farms and solar installations.

When using a gas stove or oven, ensure proper ventilation by using exhaust fans or opening windows to prevent the buildup of gas fumes. Keep flammable materials away from the appliance, never leave the stove or oven unattended while in use, and ensure proper cleaning and maintenance to avoid potential hazards.
Conduct a gas leak test using soapy water on connections and fittings. If bubbles form, there may be a leak. Contact a professional for repairs.
Natural gas leaks can be dangerous. If you smell a distinctive “rotten egg” odor or suspect a gas leak, leave the premises immediately and contact our emergency helpline or your local gas utility provider. Do not operate any electrical devices or create sparks, as they may ignite the gas.
If you smell gas, you should leave the area immediately and call your energy company’s emergency line. Additionally, to reduce the risk of an explosion, you should open windows and doors to allow for ventilation. Do not turn on any lights or appliances or use your phone until you are a safe distance away.
